Title |
2nd century disc brooch |
||
Description |
English: A copper-alloy Roman brooch. Disc brooch dating from the 2nd century AD. The body of the brooch has been made in three parts and joined together. The plate is circular and measures 21.3mm in diameter by 2.3mm thick. It has an raised outer rim and two further concentric rims inside. At the centre of the plate a central circular boss has been applied directly above another plate which has six projecting lobes. These two elements are joined to the plate by means of a central copper-alloy rivet, which can be seen projecting at the rear of the plate. Traces of gilding remain across the surface of the brooch. The pin attachment on the reverse in crudely executed. It consists of a vertical plate with a central circular hole through which passes a copper-alloy axis bar. The copper-alloy wire pin has been attached by winding it three times around the axis bar and once across the bottom of the coils (creating an external chord). The remainder of pin and the catchplate are both intact but bent. The brooch weighs 9.71g. |
