VIA Rail F40PH-2D no. 6452 is seen in the morning fog at Senneterre in the Québec province. This was the first of the 'remote' routes operated by VIA Rail I covered over the 7 week trip. Three services a week run from Montréal to Senneterre and Jonquière which are combined as far as Hervey-Jonction. The basic formation is seen here which is loco, one baggage car and one HEP economy seating car. Train is 604 "Abitibi", 06:28 Senneterre to Montréal Central. The run to Senneterre was the previous day and is a 13 and a half hour journey of 715 kms. During a block of 6 weeks in July until mid-August the timetable flips over to running as much as possible in darkness. This is because of track condition causing it to buckle in the heat. The same timetable can be implemented at other times when temperatures and bright sun are forecast. Often VIA Rail would change this a day ahead and if applied to start on a Monday would need to stay in place until at least the Friday. The train crew that work this stay overnight in a motel nearby in Senneterre so enough rest time has to apply. Fortunately forecast temperatures were low enough for the three days I covered the two lines to run to its daytime timetable. Photo was taken on my mobile phone's camera which now takes better photos in poorer light conditions than my 10 year old DSLR. |
