Description

Two routes, both branded "City Shuttle" operate between the Austrian and Slovak capitals. Seen here is the diesel worked service via Marchegg. Operating hourly, the train consists are usually three ÖBB coaches (including driving trailer), one ŽSSK coach and ÖBB class 2016 diesel loco.

Seen here at the temporary station of Wien Südbahnhof (Ostbahn) on 29 April 2012, 2016.009 is at the head of REx2505, 07:20 to Bratislava hl.st. Despite nothing more than a fairly basic commuter service, most trains are given a name, this one being "Roland". In the past haulage on this route was class 754 (ŽSR) and before that, ÖBB class 2143.

The other regular interval route is from the same Wien station through to Bratislava Petržalka in the southern outskirts of the city. This route is electrified going via Bruck an der Leitha. Trains are a mixture of double deck stock push-pulled by class 1144s and class 4124 EMUs.

The station photographed here is a temporary terminal whilst the nearby Wien Hauptbahnhof is being constructed loosely on the site of the original Südbahnhof. In fact cranes and the site can be seen in this photo's background.
