Title
2657 Roman buckle fragment
Description
English: Copper alloy late Roman buckle openwork integral plate length 30mm width 29mm, thickness 4mm, weight 6.33g. Only the front section of the buckle plate remains. The surviving section of the frame has two rivet holes either side of five ring and dot motifs, the rear of this section has the base of three arms, suggesting that the main body of the frame may have originally had two large openwork appetites. There is a rectangular slot in the centre of the forward edge for the pin, the pin is copper alloy with a rectangular cross-section and a penannular base.

On either side of the pin is a crescent 10 mm long which is lying flat to the frame, the outside edge of the crescent would have expanded to for the buckle frame. The artefact is classified as a Hawkes and Dunning (1961, 21ff.) Type IIa buckle.
