Description
English: Shore excursion: Strasbourg Highlights.

The north aisle of the Strasbourg Cathedral features five sets of stained-glass windows from around 1180 depicting rulers, each holding the royal scepter (right hand) and orb (left hand). This fourth set of the so-called “Emperor Windows” shows Charles Martel (Duke and Prince of the Franks 718-741), Charlemagne (King of the Franks 768-814, Emperor of the Carolingian Empire 800-814), Pepin the Short (King of the Franks 751-768; first Carolingian to become king), and Louis the Pious (Emperor of the Carolingian Empire 813-840; co-emperor from September 813 with Charlemagne who died in January 814). Scenes from the life of Christ are depicted in the smaller, circular windows.

Strasbourg Cathedral replaced a cathedral built around 550 to 575 that was burned down in 1002. Construction of the new cathedral started in 1015 and did not finish until 1439, the work being frequently interrupted by fires, wars, political crises, and changes in plans. Its architectural style is a mixture of Romanesque and Gothic. Some changes have been made since the 15th century.

Strasbourg, Grande-Île [the historic old town] and Neustadt [the new town designed and built by the Germans from 1871 to 1918], was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988.
