Description
English: Shore excursion: Strasbourg Highlights.

The Rhine Palace (Palais du Rhin) is home to the Central Commission for the Navigation of the Rhine, the oldest international organization in the world having been founded in 1815.

The building was originally the Imperial Palace (Kaiserpalast) built between 1884 and 1888 when the German Empire had annexed Alsace-Lorraine following the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871. Strasbourg was the capital of the new German province and an official residence for the Kaiser was needed. The Neo-Renaissance palace housed Kaiser Wilhelm II for twelve visits.

Strasbourg reverted back to France in 1918 at the end of World War I. During World War II, the German army captured the city in June 1940. French forces liberated it in November 1944.

Strasbourg, Grande-Île [the historic old town] and Neustadt [the new town designed and built by the Germans from 1871 to 1918], was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988.
