Summary
[edit]Description2020 Enders House Schoharie Crossing.jpg |
English: The Enders House in schoharie Crossing State Historic Site in Fort Hiuunter, New York, was built in the 1800s. In a 1991 restoration of the house, it was found that it was built on the foundation of a Mohawk house which had been part of a 1760s Mohawk town called the Lower Mohawk Castle, "castle" been the name used for a Mohawk town. While maintaining their culture and identity, the Mohawks had begin by that time to live in European-style single-family houses, which replace the traditional communal bark-covered longhouses. These cabins had stone foundations, wood-frames, with brick chimneys, tiled floors, glass windows and plastered walls. The exterior ornamentation of the houses remained in the traditional Mohawk manner. The Mohawks had sufficient money to use European and Chinese ceramics, drink tea, and use firearms more often than bows and arrows. (Source: Sign on site) |
