English: Machinal is a 1928 play by American playwright and journalist Sophie Treadwell, inspired by the real-life case of convicted and executed murderer Ruth Snyder. Its Broadway premiere, directed by Arthur Hopkins, is considered one of the highpoints of Expressionist theatre on the American stage.
A production of Machinal was presented by the CBU Boardmore Theatre Company at the Boardmore Playhouse, Cape Breton University, in Cape Breton Regional Municipality, Nova Scotia, Canada in February 2019. In this scene, situated in a 1920’s New York speak-easy, a married woman begins an affair with a stranger, a gay man seduces a younger man, and a couple discusses an abortion, all under the watch of a drunk policeman, a bartender, and a waiter. Playing the roles are Lindsay Mae Thompson, Steven Peters, Daniel Farrow, Tony Hajjar, Jill Taylor, Rob Bowden, Wayne McKay, Bob Lewandowski, and Bryan Nash. |
