Description
English: View towards the south of Railway 20 in Maastricht-Belvédère, Netherlands. The single track railway between Maastricht and Hasselt (Belgium) was built between 1853 and 1856. It was closed for passenger trains in 1954 and for freight trains in 1994. The section between Maastricht and Lanaken was renovated between 2004 and 2007. There are plans to use sections of the line for a tram between Maastricht and Hasselt. This section in the industrial area of Belvédère is known to be a habitat for the common wall lizard (Podarcis muralis) and other relatively rare species, for which low walls and stacks of wood have been erected along the railway. On the east side of the tracks a walking path has been laid out.
