| Description | Hurricane Harvey has affected the Houston Independent Schools District (ISD) to such a degree that it has waived its school meal fees to families for this school year, in Houston, TX, September 20, 2017. The storm caused widespread family relocations, income disruptions, and other factors that made it difficult to provide food insecurity for children. Ashford Elementary School and the other schools of Houston ISD waived the cost and need to apply for the free meal programs for breakfast, lunch and dinner. These meals are provided in part by the USDA Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) who today at this school are providing the fresh and canned fruits; and black beans. This has increased the school meals participation from approximately 350 students, to 450 students. USDA Photo by Lance Cheung. |
