Summary

[edit]
Description

Near the southern tip of Sun Island (Isla del Sol), a two-level Inca palace blends into the hillside. The palace is believed to have been built by Túpac Inca Yupanqui who ruled from 1471 until his death in 1493. (His father was the emperor Pachacuti who built Machu Picchu in Peru. One of his great-grandsons, Francisco Tito Yupanqui, carved the Virgin [Mary] of Candelaria [Virgen de Candelaria] statue enshrined not far from here in the Basilica of Our Lady of Copacabana.)

The Aymara, early inhabitants in the area, called the island Titi Khar’ka (Rock of the Puma) which is the source of Lake Titicaca’s name. One myth holds that the island is the dwelling place of the sun, hence the name for the island now. Manco Cápac, the son of the sun and the first Inca, is said to have emerged on the northern part of the island.

Lake Titicaca (elev. 3,812m/12,507ft) on the border of Peru and Bolivia in the Andes is the largest alpine lake in the world and the largest lake in South America.
