Summary

[edit]
Description

At the top of the reconstructed Inca Stairway (Escalera del Inca) on Sun Island (Isla del Sol) is a spring that the Spaniards believed to be a fountain of youth. To the Incas, the three streams were a representation their national motto: don’t steal, don’t lie, don’t be lazy. Today the spring is a source of water for the locals.

The Aymara, early inhabitants in the area, called the island Titi Khar’ka (Rock of the Puma) which is the source of Lake Titicaca’s name. One myth holds that the island is the dwelling place of the sun, hence the name for the island now. Manco Cápac, the son of the sun and the first Inca, is said to have emerged on the northern part of the island.

Lake Titicaca (elev. 3,812m/12,507ft) on the border of Peru and Bolivia in the Andes is the largest alpine lake in the world and the largest lake in South America.
