Description

Pale madwort (Alyssum alyssoides), Wild Alyssum (Alyssum simplex), more mature Pale madwort (Alyssum alyssoides), and Szowits' madwort (Alyssum szovitsianum), Mustard family (Brassicaceae). Red Butte Garden Natural Area, Salt Lake City, Utah.

The fruiting raceme remains congested in A. szovitsianum and elongates in other two species. The sepals stay longer in A. alyssoides and fall off early in other two species. The mature silicles are larger (4-5.5 mm in diameter) in A. simplex, compared to A. alyssoides (3-3.7 mm). The style in A. simplex is longer (0.9-1.6 mm), compared to 0.3-0.5 mm style in A. alyssoides.

The mature silicles of A. alyssoides are similar to ones in A. desertorum (not shown), but different in having small stellate hairs on the surface, visible under a high (10X) magnification lens. In A. desertorum, the silicles are completely glabrous.
