A festival dedicated to the sun god Surya, Pongal is marked by a special rice dish prepared in milk and jaggery, sometimes with other ingredients such as cashews, raisins and sweet spices.

Prepared in homes and at Hindu temples, it is shared with family, friends, visitors and all pilgrims.

Pongal, l'une des fêtes les plus importantes du Tamil Nadu, est une sorte d'équivalent de Thanksgiving. La population remercie la nature pour les récoltes fructueuses qu'elle a permis. Les maisons sont décorées, on achète de nouveaux vêtements et les femmes préparent des plats traditionnels.
