[edit]Description20150708 - 14 - Wawa, Ont. - Wawa Goose, closer.jpg |
English: A view of the Wawa Goose in the eponymous town of Wawa, Ontario, Canada, as seen on a July 2015 morning. Dating to 1960, this 28-foot stainless steel statue of a Canada goose is the most famous of a chain of offbeat roadside monuments that have been erected along the Trans-Canada Highway in remote Northern Ontario by local business interests keen on attracting passing motorists to stop off and spend time in their respective towns. More specifically, the goose was the brainchild of local dry cleaning shop owner Al Turcott, who was instrumental in the effort to convince government planners to route the Schreiber-Sault Ste. Marie stretch of the highway along the shore of Lake Superior - one of two proposed options - but was dismayed when the highway ultimately detoured around, rather than through, Wawa's downtown. The goose in this photo is the second of three that have stood at the same site, namely the junction of provincial Highways 17 and 101: the first was made of plaster and quickly proved unsuitable to the harsh local climate, leading to its replacement in 1963 with the version seen here. The third and current goose was installed in 2017, two years after this photo was taken. |
