| Description |
English: As seen on a July 2015 morning: the Guelph Civic War Memorial, situated at the northwest corner of Woolwich Street and Wyndham Street North in downtown Guelph, Ontario, Canada. Designed in 1927 by British-born sculptor Alfred Howell, this cenotaph is dedicated to local citizens who sacrificed their lives in the two World Wars and the Korean War, and is rich with symbolism: at the top is a personification of the spirit of Canada, holding and gesturing at a name on the national military roll while watching over the horizon for her returning sons and daughters, looming over the figure of a Canadian serviceman in uniform. Uniquely, the bronze figure in front, representative of justice, pays equal tribute to both sides of the respective conflicts, emphasizing with the two identical downturned swords in each hand that all participants in war fight for what they perceive as justice, and that the ultimate victory is the peace that ensues after the end of the conflict (as represented by the laurel wreaths decorating both swords). |
