Summary
[edit]Description20130514-NRCS-KW-0003 (14556974711).jpg | Erosion in the Red River Basin (RLB) on May 14, 2013. The Red River Basin is located in parts of Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota, has lost significant amounts of native prairie and wetlands and continues to experience severe flooding. That flooding has also resulted in loss of wildlife habitat and increased water quality concerns. Severe flooding has plagued the RRB for more than 20 years. Rapid snowmelt has resulted in significant erosion, impairing water quality. Rapidly moving water often flows over the river’s banks, destroying wildlife habitat and adversely impacting existing conservation practices designed to control the water’s flow and improve water quality. As a result, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) created the Red River Basin Initiative (RRBI) to resolve these natural resource issues. RRBI, covering 25 million acres in three states, is located in the mid-continent Prairie Pothole Region, a critical migratory wildlife pathway.
