Clitocybula azurea Singer Image location: Ciudad Perdida-Parque Teyuna Trail, Parque Nacional Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, Magdalena, Colombia I found this blue beauty while hiking the Ciudad Perdida trek in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in Magdalena, Colombia. I was so excited to see a blue mushroom! There were tons of these all concentrated in one small area, growing on dead trees of unknown type. Temperatures were 50s-60s at night and up to 90 during the day. Extremely humid jungle environment, but these were in a slightly sunnier spot than typical for the area. They were growing singly but in large groups. Pretty small. A few centimeters across and taller than the caps are wide. Waxy slightly umbonate bell-shaped blue to blue-green cap turning whiter at the edges with a thin, smooth whiter stalk and whiter gills. Gills forked, attached, with some beginning some distance from the stipe. Very fragile looking, almost translucent in appearance. Lots of bugs crawling on the caps and up under the caps, too. Unfortunately there’s no sample. I wasn’t sure I’d be able to dry this (doing a pretty strenuous hike without proper collection tools) or get it through customs.
