Summary
[edit]Description2011-07-21 Glonium stellatum 159064.jpg |
English: Glonium stellatum
Image location: Blackstone, Massachusetts, USA This fungus starts off a small roundish patches of radiating carbonaceous hysteriothecia on a coarsely woolly black subiculum. The fruiting bodies grow and extend over a larger area, becoming confluent and creating crustlike patches many centimeters in extent. I saw a rotten old one on an oak log that was more than ten cm in length. I’ve found it two times now and both were on rotted oak. Used references: http://www.eboehm.com/glonium.html Eric Boehm’s hysteriothecial fungi website Based on microscopic features: Bitunicate asci. 8-spored, cylindrical with shortish stipe. Mine average a little larger than what’s listed in the descriptions but who’s counting microns? What!? Ascospores average 26.5 × 7 micrometers. Hyaline. Intact bitunicate ascus with ascospores in a water mount
