English: BURNHAM HOARD 2010 T509: Item A.4 Socketed Axe; South Eastern - ribbed

Complete cast copper alloy socketed axe. There is a wide upper mouth mounding with a second moulding below which is now largely obscured by corrosion. The top edge of the side loop is joined over the lower moulding. It is rectangular in cross section and the mouth has rounded corners. A casting seam is visible on the unlooped side towards the socket mouth. Both sides of the axe are largely covered in corrosion products. The axe is decorated on the front and reverse face with three thin and evenly distributed ribs extending down from the mouth mouldings and extend approximately 48mm down the length of the body. The cutting edge has a small amount of damage due to corrosion.

Length: 95.08mm. Weight: 291.75grams. Socket opening: 31.92mm by 28.46mm. Socket mouth: 45.90mm by 41.71mm. Loop: 20.30mm long, 4.70mm wide; located 14.10mm from mouth opening. Body: 41.38mm wide by 22.47mm thick. Cutting edge: 56.63mm.
