English: Burnham Hoard 2010 T509: vessel content 4.A Socketed Axe; South Eastern - Pellet decorated (Petters type A.2)

Content of vessel T.D.2 located aproximately 40mm from the top of the vessel.

Cast copper alloy socketed axe. There is a double mouth moulding, with a wide upper mouth moulding and narrower moulding below. The top of the side loop extends from the lower mouth moulding. The loop is filled with corrosion. The body sides are slightly concave, increasing in width to form the blade end. There is some damage to the blade tip, on the side of the loop. The body is rectangular in section and the corners of the mouth are rounded. There are traces of what appears to be organic material within the socket. There are prominant casting seams on both sides of the main body. There is a small raised pellet just below the narrower mouth moulding in the centre of both the front and back faces. One face is covered in corrosion.

Length: 118.94mm. Socket opening: 27.19mm by 27.50mm. Mouth: 40.70mm by 40.85mm. Side loop 23.10mm long, 11.49mm wide. Loop is located 15.14mm from mouth. Body width 27.50mm, thickness 23.06mm. Cutting edge 39.24mm wide.Weight: 287g
