Description

Ascobolus immersus

Image location: Stueben, Maine, USA

Fruiting body was about 1mm, pale yellow-green, pulvinate with a large gelatinous glob at the apex? I think these were a little immature as there was only one ascus that ejected it’s spores in my water mount and these looked dark and mature. The others looked lighter in color or hyaline. I’ll check on these again in a few days and see if I can get some more mature specimens. (actually, I just read in Van Brummelen that the FB only produces a few mature asci at a time and not all the ascospores are mature at a time, so these FB’s were mature). This one was cool because the asci and ascospores were so huge you could see them nicely at 10x!!! Lovely spore color. This dung was collected in mid August, dried, and rehydrated on November 13th and I worked this up today on Nov. 30th.

Based on microscopic features: SPORES: Wine red-purple in color with fissures, elliptical, smooth, with gelatinous sheath. 62.7 × 36 micrometers. PARAPHYSES: Filiform, septate. ASCI: Clavate 8-spored, operculate.
