English: 2006 T480: Post-medieval gold finger ring
Date: 16th or early 17th century Description: Complete gold ring. The ring takes the form of a band with a significant groove around its circumference giving the impression of double bands joined by a central plain band of gold. Each of the ‘two’ bands is decorated with a mirrored design of running design of curlicues and diagonal bands. In the gaps of the design, some white enamel can be seen to survive. To the inner face of the band is an inscription which is in capital letters and in Latin: MEDIOCRIA FIRMA followed by a ?blundered letter? This probably translates as ‘Strength in moderation’. The hoop is slightly distorted but has a diameter of 23.06mm by 16.68mm. the hoop is 5.68mm wide and 1.18mm thick. The ring weighs 3.60g. A similar ring, with a different design and inscription can be seen in the Treasure Annual Report 2002, number 153. The object contains a minimum of 10% gold and is over 300 years old. Consequently it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996 in terms of both age and precious metal content. Caroline McDonald Colchester Museums October 2006 |
