In 1997, Wendell Simpson became Superintendent of the Natchez Trace Parkway. During his tenure, the 444-mile parkway construction program was completed. Ceremonies to commemorate this historic event were held on May 21, 2005—ending a 67-year journey that began in 1938. Simpson retired July 1, 2006.
