Title
1st century Roman brooch
Description
English: Incomplete copper alloy Romano-British ‘Colchester’ two piece brooch, type BB. The wings on this brooch are short, but appear complete. They are semicylindrical and without decoration. Behind the head is a lug with two circular perforations that would have held the spring chord. The spring and pin are entirely missing. There is only a very slight crest on the head that is almost imperceptible. The bow and foot are suboval in section. The brooch is abraded but there appears to be a grooved line running the length of the bow. The bow tapers towards the foot which ends complete without a foot knob. The curled catchplate is complete with a filed recess and a figure of eight perforation. The patina of the object is orangey brown with patches of light green. A heavily corroded fragment of spring coil has become separated from the brooch. The brooch is 46.06mm long, 17.1mm wide across the wings, 4.96mm wide across the bow, 2.14mm thick and weighs 3.29g. Brooches of this type date from between 50-70AD. A similar example can be seen in Hattatt 1985, figure 12, number 259.
