Description
English: An incomplete copper-alloy Roman Colchester-derivative brooch with a double-pierced lug type, dating 43-100 AD.

Description:

The outer face of the humped bow has a raised line running alonge each side of the bow with two high raised ribs flanking a central third which may have been silvered or tinned and the underside is flat. The brooch foot is missing, this part of the brooch having broken off and the break patinated and worn.The wings are crescent shaped in cross section and holds half a copper-alloy axis bar, the right half is either missing or was never present. The front of each wing is decorated with a baluster moulding flanked by a band of incised oblique lines. The sprung copper-alloy pin remains only as its spring which is complete under the wings, the pin having snapped at the head. The brooch is patinated light green/turquoise colour typical of copper-alloy.

Measurements: 28.74mm long, 35.2mm wide, 14.17mm thick and 13.26g in weight.

Discussion:

Similar brooches are recorded from Hacheston, Suffolk (Plouviez 2004, 95-97, fig. 64), Hattat, 2000 Visual Catalogue of Ancient Brooches, (2000), fig. 157 nos. 1508, 885 and 888. Compare also ESS-C50EF7 and FASW-371BE4.
