Description

US/Canada border: Montana/Saskatchewan. Looking E E SE along boundary which runs along fence at right, from the fence post with the non-significant black mess at photo edge, to shiny monument 582 at the crest on the horizon, elev. 686 m, 49d 00'N 104d 04'W.

But is the fence on the border or slightly on one side of the border, and which side?
Hard to tell in the photo. To solve this we know that regulations say that a clear line of sight must be maintained on the border, except for the monuments, precluding any fences actually running atop the border. We know that on the Montana side (which by the way is one hour earlier than Saskatchewan's timezone here,) we are dealing with an incomplete 6 x 6 mile township---being cut off at the top by the Canadian border. However on the Canada side we are starting afresh at T1N, complete with the road allowance that is reserved along many township and section lines, no matter if later a road got built there or not (we are riding down the middle of this allowance in the photo.) Who's going to fence in a road allowance that doesn't belong to them? It's obviously the Montana farmer/rancher who erected the fence, and one would expect that it's a meter or more set back from the boundary for safety margin in case of later surveying disputes, etc.
Well you visited there, don't you remember the placement of the fence?
Yes and er, no.
What do the satellite images say about that fence?
OK (2023, Google) it seems the fence is two meters south of the monument!
