English: 1993 DAF SB220 chassis with Optare Delta B48F step entrance bus body with a DAF LC1160 11.6 litre turbo diesel engine, in Wilts & Dorset livery, Reg. No.L504AJT, Fleet No.3504, at the Bristol Bus Show, Brislington, 28 July 2024. It was delivered new to Hants and Dorset and later became part of the Go South Coast fleet (No.5316). Now preserved.
The DAF SB220 was introduced in 1985 and is still in production as of 2024. It was not introduced into the UK until 1988. The UK step entrance version used Optare Delta, Northern Counties Paladin or Ikarus Citybus bodies (in Ireland they were fitted with the Alexander Setanta or Plaxton Verde bodies). The low floor and low entry versions had the Alexander ALX300, East Lancs Myllenium, Plaxton Prestige, Northern Counties Paladin LF, Ikarus Polaris or Ikarus 481 bodies. The Optare Delta body, 39’2”x8’2”, was built by Optare and was in production in 1988-99. It was the first body in the UK to be fitted on the Volvo SB220 chassis and was not used on any other chassis. It could be fitted with one, two or three doors – the last variety being for BOAC airside passenger transfers at Heathrow airport. London operators bought the dual door version. |
