Two years ago today, on 28 June 2011, I joined Flickr! To celebrate I decided to upload one of my most favourite spots of the year - this fantastically original Allegro. Now, there's a bit of a story behind this one, so here goes: I was at home when my mum rang. She was heading to the supermarket and saw this parked in the service area of our local garage. All our cars were in use, so I jumped on my bike and sped down to the garage - and luckily it was still there... I've seen less than a dozen Allegros in my entire life, and this is the best of them all. A lot of people hate these, but I think they're neat.Français : L’Allegro, la plus européenne des Britanniques ? Assemblée à Seneffe entre La Louvière et Nivelles, dans ce qui demeure à l’époque le seul site de production/distribution continental du groupe BLMC (British Leyland, futur Austin-Rover), elle en est en 1977 la 500 000ème voiture à tomber de chaine.
L’usine belge, opérationnelle en 65, tourne alors à plein régime avec un effectif supérieur à 3 000 salariés sur une emprise au sol de plus de 50 000 m². Pourtant au printemps 81 à la consternation des autorités du royaume, c’est la fin, dans une région déjà sinistrée par la crise métallurgique... Le centre logistique et son gigantesque parc fermé, d’une capacité de 16 000 véhicules et qui opérait en plus du Benelux, sur l’Allemagne et la France, lui survivront 6 ans. |
