Originally, the Morris/Austin Mini based Moke was designed for the military, but lacked ground clearance. They sold quite well in the public domain, about 50,000 were built. Built from 1964-68 in the UK, and from 1966-82 in Australia. In Australia, they were the Morris Mini Moke until 1973, then a Leyland Moke. Later Australian Mokes got larger 13inch wheels. The upmarket Californian Moke got the 1275cc engine, even a pickup version was produced in 1975 Engines; 1000, 1100, 1275 4 cyl This Moke is one of six used by the Royal Australian Airforce in 1971. They were painted this easy to see yellow for flight line duties at various bases. They were used to transport personnel and equipment and even tow aircraft. 45 Mokes were used by the Airforce by the end of 1986. |
