"With a background in needle making, gun parts and bicycle manufacture, Royal Enfield progressed to build their first motorcycle in the pioneering days of 1901. Early machines copied Werner designs and were motorised by 1.5hp Minerva engines. The Crusader, introduced in 1957, was designed with many technical upgrades over previous Royal Enfield models. The company's 1964 sales brochure boasted 'without doubt the most successful machine of it's type ever produced - it's new highly efficient silencer and a power unit developing 17bhp ensures swift, silent travel"
