The Mercedes Benz Type 220 (chassis code W180) was a 6 cyl car built from 1954-59, the 4 cyl version was the Type 180 (chassis code W120), they were the first in the series of the 'Pontoon' shape cars, referring to the unibody-type, pontoon-shaped exterior styling which was also featured on the later W110/W128 line. The first 220 was the 1954 220a, a more luxurious and longer wheelbase version of the W120. Longer to accommodate the 6 cyl engine and also the rear seat passengers had more leg room, the W180 also had an extra qtr light window. The later 1956 220S was similar, but had a one piece front bumper, (the 220a was a three piece) and an additional chrome strip running along the front fenders and doors. It also got an upgraded engine with twin carbs. In July 1956 a Cabriolet (two doors, four seats) joined the line-up, and in October 1956 a Coupé version followed suit.
