Description

The Triumph name started in 1886 selling imported bicycles, they started producing motorcycles in 1902 and motor cars in 1920. Purchased by the Standard Motor Company in 1945, and from 1959 was known as Standard Triumph. Purchased by Leyland Motors in 1960, which became British Leyland in 1968. The 1949-53 Triumph Mayflower was the smaller saloon built after the take over, the larger saloon was the Renown. The Mayflower was noted for its razor-edge styling, imitating the style then still used by Bentley and Rolls-Royce, typical of British cars of the era. Available in 2 door Saloon or 2 door Drophead Coupe Standard and Triumph cars were also built in Australia by Eclipse Motors of Melbourne from CKD kits. By the end of the War, the Standard 8, Vanguard, Spacemaster and the Triumph Mayflower were built there. Eclipse Motors became the Standard Motor Company in 1952 and from 1958; Australian Motor Industries (AMI) A coupe utility variant of the Mayflower was available there. 150 examples were built
