Summary
[edit]Description1948 Leyland Titan PD1-Eastern Coach Works - 53901782101.jpg |
English: Lower deck of 1948 Leyland Titan PD1 chassis with Eastern Coach Works bus body and originally with a Leyland 7.4 litre E181 6-cylinder diesel engine but now with a 10 litre engine at the Bristol Bus Show, Brislington, 28 July 2024. Registration No.LAE13, Bristol Omnibus Fleet No.C4044, withdrawn 1962 and sold to Stoneman (Cornwall) who used it until 1972. The bus was one of a batch of 100 PD1 and PD1A’s bought by the Tilling Group, 50 with BBW (Brislington Bus Works i.e. Bristol) bodies and 50 with ECW ones to augment Bristol chassis supplies, such was the urgent need for buses post-war.
The Leyland Titan was built in 1927-42 and 1945-69 and was much developed over the years. It was exported in quantity and also built in India by Ashok. The pre-war models were the TD1-8 (initially petrol engines, diesel from 1939) built from 1927 until 1942. Post war, production restarted in 1945 with virtually a new design and continued until as late as 1969 with continuous improvements (though all with improved diesel engines): PD1, PD2 and PD3 with a plethora of sub-marks and different bodies. Export versions were OPD1, 2 & 3. |
