Introduced in 1928, Plymouth was Chryslers lowest priced car, Dodge was next, then Desoto and Chrysler was top of the line. It was built as an inexpensive family vehicle to compete with Ford and Chevy. The 1938 car was a mildly facelifted version of the '37 car, its fat waterfall grille and the bug-eyed head lamps mounted high on the sides of the radiator shell did little for the looks of the car. Two models were available; The base model P5 Business, later in the year called the Roadking was available in 2 door Coupe, 2 and 4 door Sedan (flat back) and 2 and 4 door Touring Sedan (trunk back) The upmarket model was the P6 Deluxe, available in Convertible, 2 door Coupe, 2 and 4 door Sedan, 2 and 4 door Touring Sedan, Limousine and Suburban Wagon. Outwardly, the only noticeable difference between the P5 and P6 models was the lack of vent wing windows on the P5 cars.
