Angeles. The competition was for the best de-sign and plan for a one-story house, thefloor area of which was limited to 1400sq. ft., to be constructed with exteriorwalls of reinforced Groutlock masonry. Minimum requirements were that eachplan should provide for at least a livingroom, kitchen, bath and one or two bedrooms. Otherwise utilization of the allow-able floor area was entirely at the optionof the competing architect, an option whichwas very freely exercised, it is revealed bya study of the drawings submitted. Onlyone entry failed to qualify, due to the useof a color tint, whereas the program calledfor all renderings in black and white. None of the prize winners show anyvery radical departures from traditionalarchitectural design. It is interesting tonote that in all the drawings accepted therewas no evidence of a trend to the ultra-modern and that however popular it maybe in the commercial field architects gen-erally do not look with favor upon it forresidential work. ^31 ►
