U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. — Finishing 3-1, Air Force started the season in fine fashion with home matches against the Universities of Kentucky and Nebraska and UTEP, Oct. 26-27. Following a weekend of matches, the Air Force rifle team will travel to West Point, N.Y., for the annual President’s Trophy Matches against Army, Navy and the Coast Guard, Nov. 2. Saturday, in a quad match, the Falcons beat Nebraska, 4674-4636, and UTEP, 4560 (Air Force won the smallbore match 2315-2309 versus UK). Kentucky won the overall team match with a score of 4686. Falcons’ sophomore Peter Fiori led all shooters in smallbore with a score of 587. He also had a 593 in the air rifle. Sunday, Air Force took the line against Nebraska, winning the overall match, 4664-4646. Fiori led all competitors with scores of 587 smallbore and 596 air rifle. His combined total for both days was 2362. Fiori starts the season with the country’s second-best aggregate average (1181.5) following a weekend of matches. Kentucky’s Mary Tucker leads with just a half point (1182). Following the service academies matches in November, the Air Force Academy’s rifle team will compete against the Coast Guard, John Jay and MIT at the West Point range, Nov. 3. The competitor wears shooting glasses as a visual aid. Though the glasses are extremely customizable, most pairs contain three basic elements: a lens, a mechanical iris (not present in this image), and blinders. These components work together to help shooters focus on both the faraway target and their gun's sights at the same time. |
