Description
English: 1900 photo postcard of the Herbst Elementary School, Fifth and Chew Streets. The school was named for Dr. Henry Herbst, a school board member and former mayor of Allentown. It is estimated that Dr. Herbst educated 30,000 students in the Allentown School District. The school was closed in 1977 due to declining enrollment. The school building was bought by Sacred Heart Hospital in 1978 and demolished it the next year. It was replaced by medical offices for the Hospital.)
