Deutsch: Olivier widmete sich in seiner Malerei Themen der Mittelalter-Romantik. Das Gemälde „Der Graf von Habsburg“ bezieht sich auf eine Ballade Friedrich Schillers von 1805, durch die sich bis in die Spätromantik eine Reihe von Malern anregen ließen. Es geht in der Ballade um die christliche Tugend des weltlichen Herrschers. So hatte der Legende nach einst Rudolf Graf von Habsburg einem Priester sein Jagdpferd zur Verfügung gestellt, damit er schnell und sicher einem Sterbenden das heilige Sakrament bringen konnte. Das Motiv war seinerzeit von politischer Brisanz. Nach dem Ende des „Heiligen römischen Reiches deutscher Nation“ hatte es 1806 Bestrebungen gegeben, dem österreichischen Kaiser die deutsche Kaiserkrone anzutragen, um die Einheit des alten deutschen Reiches wiederherzustellen. |
