Title
17th century vervel in the name of Sir George Sondes
Description
English: A complete worn silver Post-Medieval vervel or hawking ring dating tot he 17th century.

Description: The hoop is D-shaped in cross-section, flat externally and curved internally. The outer surface has the inscription 'SR George Sondes Lees [__]' (the last section is illegible and may actually be an initial mark of some description) incised on it; in reference to Sir George Sondes the likely owner of the bird to which this ring relates. It survives in good condition although some wear obscures the inscription.

Measurements: 10.21mm in diameter, 2.49mm thick (band 1.1mm thick) and 0.55g in weight.

Discussion: Hawking vervels frequently bear the name and place of residence of the owner of the hawk. They would have been attached to the leather jesses or thongs on hawks' legs, allowing them to be attached to a block or leash. Numerous similar examples have now been reported under the Treasure Act, 2015T342 (<a href="https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/716636" title="Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire">BH-0FB1A8</a>) and 2017T159 (<a href="https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/831366" title="View details for NMS-584F18">NMS-584F18</a>) being two recent examples. The italic but not cursive lettering would suggest a date during the 1st three quarters of the 17th Century.

This vervel was found on land now part of the Lees Court Estate, apparently mentioned on this vervel. It also names Sir George Sondes, likely the Sir George Sondes (c. 1599-1677) named 1st Earl of Feversham, Viscount Sondes in 1665. Sir George Sondes was born, lived and died at the Lees Court Estate and indeed the current Countess Sondes is still based at Lees Court. A date in the lifetime of Sir George is therefore suggested.
