Description

Minister Koenders bezocht het University College Roosevelt in Middelburg. Daar opende hij het academisch jaar met een toespraak in de Nieuwe Kerk.

Voor de openingsceremonie sprak de minister op het University College met onderzoekers, lokale bestuurders en ervaringsdeskundigen over de naleving van internationale mensenrechten op lokaal niveau (provincies, gemeenten).

Lokale overheden krijgen steeds vaker te maken met internationale uitdagingen; ze spelen bijvoorbeeld een belangrijke rol in de implementatie van internationale mensenrechten. Middelburg is hiervan een voorbeeld. De gemeenteraad spoorde in 2010 in een motie de stad aan om ‘mensenrechtenstad’ te worden.

Na dit gesprek opende Koenders samen met burgemeester Harald Bergmann van Middelburg het onderzoekscentrum Cities of Refuge, dat met name gaat bestuderen hoe relevant internationale mensenrechten zijn voor de manier waarop Europese steden vluchtelingen verwelkomen en integreren.
