Description Workers move dredged material into the Savannah River Feb. 17, 2017 where it will eventually be pumped into a Dredged Material Containment Area managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Contractors with Continental Heavy Civil are removing the Sediment Basin Tidegate as part of the Savannah Harbor Expansion Project. The mitigation feature includes demolishing the tidegate structure and widening the river to re-direct the flow of saltwater to significantly reduce the amount of impacts to freshwater marsh. The flow re-routing plan will direct more freshwater into the Back River area on the South Carolina side of the river. Up to 4,000 cubic yards of dredged material can be moved per day, according to Fernando Rabell, a quality control manager with Continental Heavy Civil. The project currently sits at 32 percent completion with a projected end date of December 2017.
