Title
16th to 17th century book clasp
Description
English: A copper-alloy book clasp of 16th to 17th century AD date. The piece is comprised of two attached plates and is of an ornate design. The main part of the upper plate is rectangular in shape and is decorated with a single impressed ring and dot design and, towards the hook end, parallel indented lines. The main part of the plate is separated from the backward-facing hook by a rectangular border which is slightly wider than the plate. At the opposite end the plate fans outwards from 14.3mm to 25.7mm wide. The design at this end depicts four feathers and terminates in an undulating edge. Three vertically aligned cells sit within the feather pattern and may originally have contained glass insets. The lower plate is riveted to the upper plate by three copper-alloy rivets, two of which are at the decorated end, whilst the other is situated towards the hook end. The lower plate mirrors the shape of the upper one but is slightly smaller. The overall dimensions of the object are 46.3mm long by up to 25.7mm wide and 2mm thick. It weighs 9.09g and is slightly bent and corroded.
