JPEG file comment | MINIATURIST, Italian
(active 1480-1500 in Northern Italy) Marlianus Codex 1488 Illumination on parchment Biblioteca Guarnacci, Volterra The miniature at the beginnig of the text represents Matthias, King of Hungary. It is considered as the best portrait of the King and recently it is attributed to Ambrogio de Predis, a famous Lombardian master. The coat-of-arms held by two putti at the bottom is that of Matthias. The codex contains the text of a speech of Marlianus, senator of Milan, which he delivered on the occasion of the betrothal of János Corvin and Bianca Maria Sforza in 1488. (The plan for the marriage finally failed.)
