Description
English: Sheet copper alloy book clasp, length 27mm, width 14mm, thickness >1mm, weight 1.98g. This example is rectangular in plan, the base is expanded with three semicircular notches at the terminal. The forward edge is narrowed and bent round to form a hook. In the centre of the topside is a decorative ring and dot motif. There are two rivet holes, one in front of the other, both have copper alloy rivets still in place.

The artefact has been bent back on itself and is in a poor condition, suffering heavily from corrosion that has striped away the original surface leaving a dark brown-pitted layer.

Artefacts such as this have been discovered in excavations and have been found to predominately date to the 15th and 16th centuries such as the examples discovered in the York excavations (Ottaway & Rogers, 2002, 2937-2939)
