Object history Kurz nach seinem Regierungsantritt 1535 löste Joachim II. von Brandenburg, der 1539 zum Protestantismus übertrat, das Dominikanerklosters zu Cölln auf. Ab 1536 stattete er die Kirche prunkvoll zur Hof- und Domkirche und Grablege der Hohenzollern aus. Der großformatige Passionszyklus mit 14 Mitteltafeln entworfen und konzipiert von Lucas Cranach dem Älteren mit dessen Schlangensignatur, ausgeführt von seinem Sohn und Werkstattmitarbeiter sollte die alten Altäre ersetzen. Als Vorbild diente die Ausstattung des Halleschen Doms 1519–1525 mit 16 Passionsaltären, die Joachims II. Onkel Kardinal Albrecht von Brandenburg bei Cranach in Auftrag gab. Spätestens ab 1617 waren die Tafeln in der Erasmus­kapelle des Berliner Schlosses und dann in den königlichen Museen Aus dem Bestand der
