Title |
14th century strap end |
||
Description |
English: A medieval copper-alloy strap-end. A two-piece strap-end which probably dates from the 14th century AD. The upper plate has been cast and is joined at the distal end to the sheet metal back plate. The attachment half of the upper plate tapers slightly from right to left (as you look at it) and extends into a narrow waisted section. This, in turn, extends into a decorative terminal with a convex outer edge and moulded decoration depicting a scallop shell. The sheet metal back plate mirrors exactly the shape of the upper plate but lacks any decoration. There is no spacer plate between the two plates. A pair of opposing circular rivet holes at the right hand edge of the plates, one containing part of the copper-alloy rivet, indicates how the strap was attached. The object measures 54.5mm long by up to 15.2mm wide and has a total thickness of 3mm. It weighs 5.76g. |
