JPEG file comment | UNKNOWN MASTER, Netherlandish
(active in the 1360s in Utrecht) Calvary of Hendrik van Rijn c. 1363 Panel, 133 x 130 cm Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten, Antwerp The earliest pre-Eyckian panel which survives in the Netherlands, The Calvary of Hendrik van Rijn, was painted by an Anonymous Utrecht (?) Master. According to the Latin inscription at the bottom, the donor, shown kneeling and in profile, is Hendrik van Rijn. He is significantly smaller than the saints who surround him: Christ on the cross, Mary and John. This memorial work was produced for Saint John's church in Utrecht, to commemorate Van Rijn, who was provost and archdeacon. The relief decoration in the background is particularly interesting, consisting as it does of gilded tiles with a lion motif, and refers to the reality of heaven.
