(active 1385-1398 in Florence) Antiphonary (Folio 5) 1385-90 Tempera and gold on parchment, 280 x 280 (initial) British Library, London This cutting is from the missing folio of an Antiphonary (Cod. Cor. 11) at the Biblioteca Laurenziana, Florence, one of the volumes of an antiphonary written for Santa Maria degli Angeli. The commission to illuminate the antiphonaries from Santa Maria degli Angeli. twelve volumes of which were written between 1385 and 1398, seems at first to have been entrusted to Don Silvestro dei Gherarducci. Don Silvestro completed only three of the twelve volumes. The initial E is from folio 5 of the Antiphonary. It encloses the scene with Christ and the Apostles. A half-length figure, probably of David, is set in a roundel in the centre of the bas-de-page. The initial is attributed to the Master of the Ashmolean Predella. This intriguing artist began his career Orcagna's assistant in 1367-68. He seems to have remained in Orcagna's workshop after Jacopo di Cione inherited its obligations upon his brother's death in 1368; he is recognizable as Jacopo's collaborator in the early 1370s. Independent works from his late career are markedly looser in handling. It is from this phase of his career, close to 1390, that the illuminations in Cod. Cor. 11 and Cod. Cor. 16 must date.
