13th century seal matrix impression.
Description
English: Copper alloy circular seal matrix with hexagonal handle ending in loop with three slightly projecting knops. The device is two crossed arms with hands and a small bird above. The inscrption starts at the bottom with a star and reads *LEL AMI AVET (Lombardic)- "You have a loyal friend". The edges of the matrix are slightly damaged. The handle is slightly bent to one side - the original surface is damaged around the bend. Fine grey-green patina. Length 27.62mm, diameter 19.28mm, maximum width of handle (across loop) 7.58mm, maximum thickness of handle (across collar) 5.86mm, weight 8.32g. A virtually identical seal from Salisbury is published in P&E Saunders (1991)p34, no.23, fig7, dated 13th century.
